Doing sports

"That would be great!" Julia is very happy when her friend Alice tells her she would like to join the gym (= become a member of the gym) that Julia and Timothy go to. "Well, so tell me more about it. Do they have anything else other than the fitness classes and the gym?"

"Sure they do. They have three multi-purpose sports halls where you can play badminton, basketball, volleyball, football, whatever you want. You can also do martial arts such as aikido and karate, play table tennis and practice gymnastics (= exercises using equipment such as bars and ropes which are intended to increase strength and agility, i.e. the ability to move and bend easily)." "How about tennis?" "They have two tennis courts, and there are also two squash courts available, the kind where you have to wear white-soled shoes. Also, if you are more of the outdoors type, there are three outdoor floodlit Astroturf pitches (= areas marked for playing particular sports)." "Astro-what?" "Astroturf. It's a type of artificial grass surface. Makes for fantastic sports grounds." "Sounds good to me. I could beat you guys up at tennis and squash regularly! How much is it?" "Not too much. Timothy and I have a monthly direct debit membership with a package of everything they offer at a good discount (= price reduction), or you can pay each time you visit."
